Design and Technology

Design Technology Statement of Intent

Design Technology should nurture creativity and innovation through designing and making. We aim to equip children with knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum Design Technology programmes of study. We use the progression of skills to ensure that prior knowledge, skills and vocabulary are built upon in subsequent year groups. Teachers then use the progression of skills in order to map this into a long term plan, linking with science and foundation subjects.

Implementation

We ensure that teachers of the subject have excellent subject knowledge, and leadership supports that acquisition of this for non-specialist teachers. Subject matter is presented clearly, teachers carefully check learning and identify misconceptions, providing direct feedback. Teaching is designed to ensure children know more and remember more. National Curriculum statutory requirements are planned and delivered using strategies based on our school ethos of awe and wonder. This includes:

  • Topic related ‘wow’ and ‘reflection’
  • Themed continuous provision
  • Ensuring there is a clear purpose for the product
  • Vocabulary
  • Carefully chosen resources

Impact

Children will know more, remember more and understand more about design technology. This is evidenced through pupil voice, monitoring and looking at outcomes, which are measured by looking at whether children are working below, at or above the national standard. Children are to retain prior-learning and explicitly make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning.
